Kohei Uchimura: [about the team silver medal] It was really telling this time. If we can try next time with the same team, I have no do doubt we can get the gold medal.

For Japan, the true victory is fighting and winning with the E-score. I feel like we have to remain loyal…

Beam gold and silver - My thoughts:

After watching the beam final in Nanning I was so frustrated that an amazing routine like Bai Yawens could loose to a routine like Simone Biles that was nice but nothing special to me. It got me thinking….I don’t understand why there can’t be a bonus system in the code to award when a skill is done extraordinarily well? Just like the deductions there should be a .1, .3 and .5 bonus for taking skills to another level. As it is right now there is no difference between Bai Yawen and Simones Biles skills shown above, but to me they are SO different. So my idea is that for a skill done just to fulfill the requirements (like Simone in these pictures) there should be no deduction but for someone (like Bai) there should be a bonus for super extension, flexibility/toe point, line and amplitude. So a final score would be build up by a D score, an E score and a B(onus) score.

Just to make it clear I just used the the beam final as an example and I know you can find pretty and ugly pictures of all gymnasts. My point is - there is nothing wrong with what Biles does (in the code) but i think that when someone takes the skills to the next level (like Bai) there should be some kind of reward.

Let me finish this rant with a quote from Aliya Mustafina (x):

And it seems that it doesn’t matter that we work to hit splits and point our toes; even though they’re [talking about the americans] often not quite in splits or have not-quite-pointed toes, nobody cares.”

Time for variety

Every time Vanessa Ferrari says something about other gymnasts (we all know I mean Mustafina) when she doesn’t get a medal on floor I feel like someone should remind her she only has a full spin in her routine.

When you take away the lost connections/requirements, Mustafina and Teremoto were pretty even in terms of content in their routines (i.e. mostly Ds and one F skill)

But Mustafina deserved her bronze. she wasn’t over scored neither was Teremoto underscored. If you watch both routines a few times (I know the judges only see it once but we don’t have their angle so re-watches help) you’ll notice Mustafina’s leaps and jumps are more flighty and she hits the position whereas Teremoto has quite quiet/flat jumps and she has form issues (especially on the switch 1/4). Not forgetting the dismount comparison and no one can dispute that Mustafina’s was better. Also Teremoto was a lot more stop and start than Mustafina and where Mustafina realised she wasn’t going to get her connections, she covered it up better than Teremoto.

The scores were fair. The result was fair. I think people only think it isn’t because we all know Mustafina’s routine and that she can get up to a 6.6 with all her connections compared to Teremoto’s 5.9 making it seem like a massive error in comparison. However she performed what she did well and in my opinion I’d rather have a good performance win a medal that someone with a fall which could have happened with Iordache (even though I love her).
